About the Retreat
A special retreat for Samhain and Día de los Muertos, combining yoga, aerial yoga, cultural experiences, and some of Guatemala's most meaningful seasonal traditions. Based between Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, and the Giant Kite Festival, the retreat offers the opportunity to experience this unique time of year while exploring different regions of the country.
In Guatemala, colourful kites are created and flown as a way of honouring ancestors and loved ones who have passed on. Participants will have the chance to make their own kite, learn about the traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos, and attend one of the country's famous Giant Kite Festivals, where enormous handcrafted kites fill the sky in a celebration of remembrance and community.
Alongside these experiences, daily yoga and aerial yoga sessions provide time for movement, reflection, and rest. Visits to local sites, cultural activities, and time at Lake Atitlán complement the retreat, creating a balanced experience that combines practice, tradition, and exploration in a small-group setting.
The retreat begins in the mountains near Antigua Guatemala, where participants settle into a small-group experience combining Hatha Yoga, Aerial Yoga, meditation, and shared vegetarian meals. During the first days, the group explores local culture through a coffee tasting experience, a kite-making workshop, and visits with the communities preparing for the Giant Kite Festival.
The journey continues through Antigua Guatemala, with time to discover its colonial architecture, cultural landmarks, and seasonal atmosphere as Día de los Muertos approaches. The group then travels to Finca La Loma, where yoga sessions and time in nature provide a peaceful setting before attending the Giant Kite Festival in Sumpango. This remarkable celebration offers a unique opportunity to witness one of Guatemala's most important traditions and learn more about its connection to remembrance and community.
The final days are spent at Lake Atitlán, staying by the lakeshore near Cerro de Oro. Activities include daily yoga and meditation, a visit to the Maya archaeological site of Iximché, cultural visits in Santiago Atitlán and San Pedro La Laguna, a hike to the Cerro de Oro viewpoint, and time to enjoy the landscapes, traditions, and slower pace of life around the lake before returning to Guatemala City.
